Is Veterans' Preference Bad For The National Security Workforce?
DoDI 1322.29 or JTEST-AI allows you to gain valuable experience and strengthen relationships while on active duty. The policy states:
"An eligible service member must complete at least 180 consecutive days on active duty and is expected to be discharged or released from active duty within 180 days of the start of JTEST-AI."
Review the detailed instructions, and you'll note that any service member within 180 days of leaving the military can apply for a full-time, unpaid internship with an employer for 6 months.
Operation Warfighter (OWF) is a temporary job/internship program created by the Department of Defense for service members recovering in a military treatment facility. The program provides healthcare service members with meaningful activity outside of the hospital environment and formal transition back into the military or civilian workforce.

Veterans Affairs (VA) Unpaid Work Experience (NPWE) internships provide qualified veterans and service members with at least a 20% service-connected disability who independently participate in VA's Veterans Readiness and Employment (VR&E) program. .
Fortune 500 Companies Transforming The Job Market For Veterans
Program participants receive a small monthly stipend from the VA. The VR&E program provides participating veterans with a 48-month educational privilege, enabling many NPWE veterans to complete their bachelor's or master's degrees, which will help them transition to federal agencies.
NPWE participants work a full-time schedule for 6 to 12 months after completing the background investigation (BI) process. They receive temporary security clearances, depending on the level of access for these internships.
An interim settlement may take three months or less to complete. Once the provisional clearance is granted the full BI begins and may take three to four months to complete. If the internship requires full BI, program offices must wait for its completion before starting the internship.
The LA County Veterans Internship Program offers paid internships to eligible veterans of the United States Armed Forces. Internships provide veterans with on-the-job training and work experience to effectively compete for permanent positions in the country. No experience is required to participate in this program.
